#MyBabyMyCareer
That very moment a second line appears on a pregnancy test, a woman’s head and heart begin to fill with questions like “how will I keep my job”, “who will watch my baby”, and “how will I pay for everything?”. Regardless of marital or class-status, women hold a unique place in the parenthood agreement. She is expected to be the primary caregiver for her child.
Due to the infrastructure in place in the United States, this often means taking a step back from her career or ceasing to work altogether.
RE-THINKING THE WORKPLACE FOR WORKING MOTHERS
In 2021, Save the Storks launched a national marketing campaign with the hashtag #MyBabyMyCareer to celebrate motherhood and advocate for a change in our society’s accommodations for working mothers. We live in a country where women often must choose between financial security or motherhood. Many women take weeks of unpaid leave sacrificing their income to spend time with their precious newborn. She then hurriedly returns to her job, left with outrageous daycare costs.
While we will always celebrate the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mother, we know that many women work outside the home for a variety of reasons, including financial necessity and personal fulfillment. Many women also become leaders in their chosen fields so when pregnancy comes along, they are made to feel that they would need to give up certain opportunities and advancement to facilitate motherhood. We want women to feel empowered to choose motherhood and her career. The current climate of the workforce uses the term “empowerment” to mean choosing abortion. But the reality is most women do not see abortion as an option and are instead pressured into it due to the demands of their work culture and the ensuing costs of childcare. If a woman is pressured into one choice, how can that be called “empowerment” or even really, a choice?
If the current support that companies offer towards funding an abortion for an employee were instead channeled into supporting a woman who chooses to keep her baby by making accommodations for her, a mother would then truly be empowered. These accommodations would certainly cost less and mean more in the long run; in that they would allow the mom to continue working and make valuable contributions to her company while taking care of her child. It’s a win-win situation and a solution-oriented way of thought and action that infinitely defines empowerment for women in the workforce.
SAVE THE STORKS ENCOURAGES COMPANIES TO CONSIDER MAKING ACCOMMODATIONS FOR WORKING MOMS, LIKE ALLOWING PARENTS TO BRING THEIR CHILDREN TO WORK, PROVIDING ON-SITE DAYCARE, INCREASED MATERNITY LEAVE, EQUAL PAY OPPORTUNITIES, AND TIME OFF TO ATTEND IMPORTANT FAMILY EVENTS.
WE ARE NOT ASKING SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TO LOSE MONEY WITH THIS EFFORT. WE ARE SIMPLY ASKING EVERYONE TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT HOW ALL RESOURCES ARE BEING USED AND RE-EVALUATE HOW WE MIGHT BE MORE EFFICIENT IN THE WORKPLACE. WHAT TYPE OF FLEXIBILITY CAN A BUSINESS OWNER OFFER? MAYBE A DIFFERENT WORK SCHEDULE, OR THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK REMOTELY AT LEAST PART OF THE WEEK?
ABORTION CLINICS ARE FUNDED EVERY YEAR WITH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM TAXES AND FOUNDATIONS. THE QUESTION WE SHOULD ASK IS HOW CAN WE HELP REDIRECT THESE FUNDS TO SUPPORT AND EQUIP WOMEN WHO DO WANT TO CHOOSE LIFE?
MY BABY MY CAREER IS ABOUT JOINING TOGETHER AND FIGURING OUT A WAY TO CREATE A COUNTRY WHERE WOMEN ARE TRULY EMPOWERED TO MAKE THE CHOICE FOR LIFE AND ENJOY THE GIFT OF MOTHERHOOD.
- #MyBabyMyCareer celebrates the privilege of motherhood
- #MyBabyMyCareer acknowledges that women can and should be CEO’s, entrepreneurs, business owners, and athletes. Women should not have to choose between career advancement or motherhood.

- #MyBabyMyCareer champions for longer, paid maternity leaves, childcare stipends, promotions, and flexible working accommodations for mothers.
